Timing belts & chains
The timing belt or chain keeps the top and bottom of your engine turning in step. If it fails, the damage is usually serious — replacing it on time is far cheaper than repairing the engine afterwards.
We check the schedule for your exact engine using the registration, age and mileage — not a generic rule of thumb.
Belts, tensioners, guides, pulleys and the water pump where appropriate are considered together, because access is the largest part of the job.
Accurate timing and careful reassembly protect the engine. We confirm what is required before work starts and give you a realistic timescale.
Your engine's valves have to open and close at exactly the right moment relative to the pistons. A rubber belt or a metal chain keeps them synchronised. Belts wear out and are replaced at a set interval; chains usually last longer but the guides, tensioners and oil supply can wear and cause problems.
On most modern engines, if the belt snaps the valves and pistons collide. That can mean a bent valve, a damaged cylinder head or, in the worst cases, a replacement engine. There is usually no warning before it happens, which is why the job is done to a schedule rather than when something goes wrong.
Intervals are set by mileage and by age — a low-mileage car can still be due on time alone, because the belt degrades as it gets older. If you don't know when yours was last done, send us your registration and we'll check what the schedule is for your engine.
A chain rattle is worth looking at quickly. Chains tend to give some warning before they fail, and acting on it can save the engine.
It makes sense to renew the parts that sit behind the same covers, because the labour is already being done. Depending on the engine that usually includes the tensioner, idler pulleys and, where the water pump is belt-driven, the pump itself. On chain jobs it may include the guides, tensioner and seals. We'll tell you exactly what your engine needs before we start.
It varies a lot between engines — some are straightforward, others require significant dismantling. Most cars are with us for a day, and we'll give you a realistic timescale when we quote.
The job differs hugely between engines, so there's no single price. Send us your registration for an accurate quote.
